Novell Announces NetWare Runtime v3.11
PROVO, UtahDDJan. 28, 1992DDNovell today announced NetWare Runtime v3.11, an
OEM version of NetWare v3.11 that allows vendors to add value to the Novell's
flagship operating system and deliver high-performance, cost-effective network
computing solutions to the marketplace. In addition, NetWare Runtime provides
an ideal alternative to Unix- and OS/2-based servers.
"By offering NetWare Runtime, developers and Novell can create innovative,
high-performance products that solve a variety of problems for our network
computing customers," said John Edwards, director of marketing for Novell's
NetWare systems group. "Some of these solutions are available from Novell
today, and customers can expect to see other solutions from both Novell and
developers this year."
NetWare Runtime Products
NetWare Runtime v3.11 currently ships with Novell's NetWare for SAA v1.1 NLM
that provides connectivity to IBM mainframes and AS/400 host computers. In
addition, the next version of NetWare SQL, Novell's high-performance
relational database, will offer a NetWare Runtime configuration. According to
Nancy Woodward, vice president and general manager of Novell Austin, "This
will broaden the NetWare SQL product offering and will allow system
administrators to customize a configuration that best responds to our
customers' demands."
Novell today also announced its new NetWare Hub Services and NetWare
Multiprotocol Router products (please see accompanying announcements). Both
take advantage of the NetWare Runtime operating system, allowing users to
create dedicated, hardware-independent hubs and routers using standard PC
platforms. NetWare Hub Services will be available beginning late March. The
NetWare Multiprotocol Router will be available beginning late February.
In addition to Novell's solutions, several developers are in the process of
providing NetWare Runtime products. Gupta Technologies is currently working
with Novell to certify two products that utilize NetWare Runtime. These are
the SQLBase Server, a high-performance database server and SQLGateway/APPC
that works with NetWare for SAA to connect IBM mainframe database applications
to NetWare clients.
Commenting on one of the benefits customers receive when using products
combined with NetWare Runtime, Rod Zimmerman, Novell strategic relationship
manager for Gupta said, "Novell's NetWare Runtime product will allow us to
reduce the customer's effort for installing the SQLBase NLM on a dedicated
database server to three double clicks."
NetWorth will also use NetWare Runtime to provide intelligent wiring hubs to
their customers. John McHale, president of NetWorth said, "We've decided that
NetWare Runtime is the hub operating system of the future. By combining
NetWare Runtime and NLMs with our intelligent wiring hub products we can give
our customers the capability to build powerful customized hub solutions."
Developer Support
Support is provided to developers through Novell's industry partner support
programs that include the Professional Developers' Program (PDP) and Novell
Labs. Through the PDP, developers receive access to NetWare products,
programming tools and extensive technical and marketing support services to
make the job of integrating products into the Novell environment as easy as
possible. Once a product has been developed, testing and approval is
available through Novell Labs. Approval by Novell Labs assures customers that
approved products will perform as advertised and will not harm or interrupt
their existing NetWare network.
Product Availability
NetWare Runtime v3.11 is currently available to developers of NetWare network
computing products through Novell's OEM distribution channel. For more
information on becoming an OEM partner, network computing developers in the
U.S. and Canada should contact Novell Developer Relations at 1 (800) 733-9673
